CGArchitect 3D award!

I had some great news today after my GH House image won this year's CGArchitect award in the Architectural Image section. Unfortunately, I could not attend the ceremony in Spain on July 7, but Jeff Mottle, CGArchitect's chief guru, kindly sent it to me by post and I can testify that it is huge, shiny, beautiful and very heavy. So thanks to Jeff, thanks to the…

Baby steps with BRIX

When texturing large expanses of wall or floor with a tile, brick or parquet image, vizualisation artists face a familiar dilemma: how to avoid visible tiling without losing too much resolution? In other words, large maps that show no tiling are either incredibly big RAM-wise, or they are not detailed enough to be seen up close. Maps that cover a smaller area may have the necessary…

3D World Portfolio

Just a quick note to say my image, "Bye-Bye Blue Ball", which finished first at the "When we left earth" challenge on CGArts, has just been published in 3D World Magazine (on page 12 of issue 132), and they gave it a nice full page too. A nice reminder of how different, and perhaps nicer, CG looks when printed on paper.

GH House Making-of

There's been a dearth of tips, tricks and tuts here, I know. But Ronen Bekerman has just given me a hand by publishing the tutorial for my GH House project, winner of Ronen's recent vizualisation challenge. You can find the tut here as well as two mini-tuts on how to use CG Source's great FloorGenerator plugin and how to create rain-splattered windows. The gallery for all…

Tadao Ando – Chicago House

It's been a while since I posted anything anywhere. Work has kept personal projects at bay. But I did find the time (essentially a long weekend) to do this rather simplied version of Tadao Ando's Chicago House. Here are a few samples. You can find the full series of renders here.

Flag Halyard by Hans Wegner

The 1950 Flag Halyard (now produced by PP Møbler) may not be my favourite Hans Wegner chair, but I thought it would be a nice challenge to model. It was an appropriate subject, too, to try my hand at Pixela's hair&fur tutorial. Strangely, I cannot look at this chair without thinking of Star Wars. So I thought I'd place it in a slightly more epic landscape:…

More good news

Just a quick line to say that one of my images of the Ponce House was selected for the Visualization Pro of the Week on CG Architects. I'm very proud of the accolade from this most venerable and highly professional archviz site. Head over here for the post.

Frank Gehry-style titanium scales

I had to come up with a titanium scale material for a recent project, so I thought I'd share a few tips about how I went about creating an entirely texture-based mat versatile enough to be used in a variety of project. The methode is not exactly original and many artists will have used it for other types of materials but it can be applied to…
